Position Summary 

We are assisting our client with hiring a Technical Service Specialist (Millwright). In this role, you will be responsible for directly supporting engineering projects, including the development, testing and evaluation of products.  This position will also include the requirement to lead the installation of products under the direction of an Engineering Project manager. The role will require extended periods (2 months potentially) of travel during installations and refurbishments.  The position will require achieving lead Technician status and performing cobalt loadings.  The primary focus of this position will require a high degree of technical ability and demonstrated performance in either an Electrical or Mechanical discipline. 

Reporting to the Manager, Installation & Service, the Technical Service Specialist will collaborate with, work under the direction of, and communicate with the Engineering Project Lead for the installation of Production Irradiators. This will include the assembly, installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting and maintenance. 

Responsibilities  

Under direction of, working in conjunction with, or in communication with the Engineering Project Lead: 

  • Lead installer for all PI irradiators, assembly/installation, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance of Production Irradiator equipment and all mechanical/electrical work associated with the assembly, testing and commissioning of Production Irradiators.  
  • On-going customer PI machine maintenance & customer support in areas of radiation safety and operations of PI systems.  
  • Perform Customer training in machine operation, safety, & maintenance  
  • Gather customer & market intelligence for potential sales of new equipment and services, and new business opportunities, and coordinate with the commercial team to ensure information is documented and communicated 
  • Support to Engineering in the design/concept phase for equipment upgrades as well as installation and commissioning of Production Irradiators, as well as both mechanical and electrical upgrades. Participate in estimate and design reviews, and contribute to ongoing projects as required by the project leaders. 
  • Contribute innovative recommendations and design concepts to the Engineering team, facilitating the design and installation of new Production Irradiator equipment from initial concept to prototype commissioning and final deployment at customer sites 
  • Responsible for the recommendation, drafting and implementation of procedures and safe work practices to meet performance standards for the entire process of fieldwork.  Procedures are developed by the incumbent to for appropriate approval to comply with all regulatory, safety, and performance requirements for Co 60 business.    
  • Provide recommendations and design concepts to Engineering staff with respect to the design and installation of new Production Irradiator equipment. Scope of contribution includes creating design concepts recommended material for prototypes and the commissioning and testing of prototypes, and in coordination with the lead engineer lead work groups in the implementation of final designs at Customer sites.  
  • As PI installation team lead, makes recommendations to overcome technical problems not considered during the design phase.   
  • In the field, the incumbent plays a key role in directing and managing the activities of sub-teams for machine upgrades and PI installs, consisting of external contractors and local labour.  It is the incumbent’s responsibility to maintain complete oversight of the overall execution of their sub-team's work.  
  • Support Engineering in the planning and estimating of design and installation costs on all projects.  
  • Contribute to safety culture, identify and implement safety improvement projects.  
  • Exercise comprehensive oversight over quality checks for equipment supplied by vendors before it departs for shipment. 
  • Problem-solving technical challenges that may not have been anticipated during the design phase Based on the needs of the business will be required to perform the duties of the Installation & Service Representative (i.e. Cobalt loading) and participate in training.   

  

Qualifications 

  • A college diploma (3-year technology) in a mechanical or electrical discipline 5+ years’ experience working in the nuclear products industry.    

        OR  

  • A licensed trade in a mechanical or electrical discipline with relevant work experience (309A,442A,433A) 
  • Advanced technical knowledge of the operation of Production Irradiators, including all mechanical, electrical, and associated control systems is considered an asset 

Skills and Competencies 

  • Strong leadership skills.   
  • Demonstrated practical technical skills in either the Electrical or Mechanical trades as they relate to PI installation and refurbishments. Specifically, device layout, alignment, terminations and raceway.  The successful candidate will also need to support the training of junior installers in these skills. 
  • Ability to travel to support projects for up to 2 months durations. 
  • Strong communication skills able to work with customers when discussing new products and service offerings. Able to communicate cross-functionally with multiple internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Organized and concisely completed documentation in a GMP environment.  
  • Installations are extremely high-risk operations, so any deviation from the normal process increases that risk and such decisions carry significant responsibility given the potential for poor results (i.e./ a dropped container, damage to the pool liner or source rack - both of which could result in a contamination event that could permanently shut-down customer facilities). 
  • Adaptable, confident.  Ability to adapt and identify alternative ideas to complete projects in a safe manner 
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering schematics/drawings 
  • Experience making recommendations and presenting ideas to senior leadership 
  • Demonstrated track record of generating new business opportunities and working cross-functionally with multiple teams to ensure customer satisfaction 
  • Able to travel globally.  

Additional Requirements 

  • Overtime is required. 
  • Able to travel internationally (required to travel an average of 180 days per year). 
  • Pre-employment medical screening is to be accepted as cleared prior to the start date.  
  • Background verification includes FBI fingerprinting and criminal record check 
  • Valid Canadian passport. 
  • Valid driver’s license. 

Physical Job Demands: 

  • Good manual dexterity and grip strength. 
  • Lift at least 25kgs on an occasional basis. 
  • Sustained physical work in a hot environment (destination dependent).   
  • May require work in confined places. 
  • May require working from heights.  

Training Required: Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker.
